Common uses

Flat acrylic sheet is chosen where appearance matters as much as weather protection. Pergolas and patio roofs use it for its glass-like clarity, giving a more premium finish than profiled polycarbonate. It's also used for skylight glazing, feature windows, and covered walkways where a flat, seamless look is wanted. Prismatic and Mirror acrylic sheet are used differently, typically for feature signage, display panels, and decorative wall cladding rather than roofing. Prismatic can also be used for light panel covers.

Working out how many sheets you need

Start by measuring the total roof area you need to cover, in metres, length by width. Divide this by the coverage width of a single sheet to work out how many sheets run across the roof, then check the sheet length against your rafter span to confirm one sheet covers the full length.

For example, a 6m wide by 4m long pergola roof using 620mm wide Crystalite acrylic sheet would need roughly ten sheets to cover the width, each 4m in length.

Always order slightly more than the exact measurement to allow for cutting waste and expansion gaps at the joiner. Get in touch with our team to discuss your final rafter spacing, so we can confirm it allows correctly for our aluminium glazing bar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pricing depends on the brand, sheet size, and thickness. Astariglas acrylic sheet ranges from $110.00 to $1,193.00 incl. GST. Crystalite ranges from $243.00 to $568.00 incl. GST. Astariglas Eco Cast ranges from $151.00 to $773.00 incl. GST. All prices are per sheet and include GST.

Acrylic roofing sheet is a flat, rigid plastic sheeting known for its optical clarity and durability. It's UV resistant, allows excellent light transmission, and gives a modern, crystal-clear finish that suits pergolas, skylights, canopies, and patios where appearance matters as much as weather protection.

Both are cast acrylic sheet, but from different manufacturers with different size and colour ranges. Crystalite is available in 6mm thickness only, in set panel sizes, with Clear, Light Grey, and Diffused Opal colour options and a 15-year warranty across all colours. Astariglas is available in a wider range of thicknesses from 2mm to 10mm, in larger sheet sizes, with Clear, Light Grey, Opal Frosted, and Clear Frosted colour options. Astariglas carries a 10-year warranty on coloured sheet and a 30-year warranty on clear sheet.

Astariglas Eco Cast is an environmentally friendly acrylic made from depolymerised methyl methacrylate (DMMA), which can be recycled repeatedly without losing its physical properties. It has the same optical, mechanical, and physical performance as standard virgin acrylic sheet, so you get the same clarity and durability with a lower environmental footprint.

Prismatic acrylic has a pyramid-embossed surface, and Mirror acrylic has a one-sided mirrored finish. These are decorative and specialty acrylic products rather than standard roofing sheet, and they're typically chosen for feature panels, signage, or design applications rather than pergola or patio roofing.

High-quality acrylic from a reputable manufacturer will last 10 to 30 years. Warranty length depends on the brand and colour: Crystalite carries a 15-year warranty across all colours, while Astariglas carries a 10-year warranty on coloured sheet and 30 years on clear sheet.

Yes. Astariglas offers 99% UVB filtration and over 40% UVA filtration. Crystalite offers 99% UVB filtration and over 30% UVA filtration. Both are suitable for long-term outdoor use in New Zealand conditions.

Crystalite is available in 6mm thickness, in panel sizes of 620x3000mm, 620x4000mm, and 620x6000mm. A 620x5000mm size is also available in all colours except Clear. Astariglas is available in thicknesses from 2mm to 10mm, in sheet sizes of 1220x2440mm, 2490x1880mm, and 2050x3050mm. Lengths for acrylic roofing sheet run up to 6 metres.

Astariglas comes in Clear, Light Grey, Opal Frosted, and Clear Frosted. Crystalite comes in Clear, Light Grey, and Diffused Opal.

Yes. Acrylic sheet is best cut with a fine-toothed blade on a jigsaw or circular saw. Sheets are joined over timber or aluminium rafters using a two-piece aluminium joiner, and sheets cannot be joined across the fall.

Acrylic has better optical clarity and holds that clarity longer without fading or clouding, which makes it well suited to pergolas and awnings where appearance matters. Polycarbonate is stronger, with higher impact resistance, but doesn't hold its clarity as well over time. Polycarbonate is usually the more expensive option compared to acrylic but it is the better choice for clients needing a product that is fire rated, commercial builds in particular.
